Title: Two Worlds
Bio:
Neil Thomas is the Founder & Director of Atelier One, described as "the most innovative engineering practice in the UK." His approach prioritises fundamental structural principles over reliance on computer analysis, incorporating innovative materials such as carbon fibre for U2’s touring structures and pioneering bamboo construction, which won the Supreme Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2023.
With expertise spanning timber, steel, carbon fibre, fabrics, and bamboo, Neil embodies George Bernard Shaw’s philosophy: “Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?” This mindset also drives his teaching.
He has held prestigious academic positions, including visiting professorships at Yale, MIT, and Leeds University. Since 2014, he has taught at BambooU in Bali, part of the Green School initiative, and frequently delivers public lectures at institutions such as RIBA, the V&A, and universities worldwide.
Neil’s contributions to architecture and engineering have earned him numerous accolades. In 2014, he was elected a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) and received an Honorary RIBA Fellowship. He became a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2015 and was honoured with an MBE in 2016 for his contributions to architecture, design, and engineering. In 2019, he received the prestigious IABSE Milne Medal.
